An NQLIRA Board meeting was one of several activities held by the Agency in Townsville.
CEO Shane Stone and Agency staff also hosted a roundtable with charities working with flood-affected communities and visited the new Reid River Export Yard located between Charters Towers and Townsville.

Agency staff, including CEO Shane Stone, attended the 2019 LIVEXchange live export conference.  Board member Tracey Hayes provided an update on how NQLIRA is supporting North Queensland communities recovering from flood.  The event was MC’d by fellow Board member Don Heatley.

Agency staff met with representatives from the Western and Northern Queensland Primary Health Networks, Queensland Department of Health and the Royal Flying Doctor Service to discuss the coordinated delivery of mental health support to flood impacted areas.

CEO Shane Stone attended the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the Commonwealth Government’s commitment of $180 million towards the Hughenden Irrigation Project (HIPCO).

NQLIRA staff attended the Winton Outback Festival, hosting a trade stand each day during the event. They also met with representatives of the Western Queensland Primary Health Network and Queensland Department of Health to identify future community engagement opportunities.

NQLIRA staff met with a representative of Rabobank to discuss the region’s recovery. They also met with a local charity and Queensland Government staff who are based in the Cloncurry-Richmond area.

CEO Shane Stone, Advisory Board member Don Heatley and Agency staff visited Spring Creek Barramundi to see their progress repairing ponds and other infrastructure damaged by the flood.

  • CEO Shane Stone, Advisory Board member Don Heatley and Agency staff met with Richmond Shire Mayor John Warton and other Councillors and staff, as well as Flinders Shire Mayor Jane McNamara, Councillors and staff to hear about their recovery efforts and plans to develop a diverse agricultural base.
  • NQLIRA also visited Harrington Systems Electronics to see how their remote monitoring technology helped them observe conditions during the flooding, and to discuss the role that reliable communications plays in withstanding extreme weather events and supporting a strong vibrant economy.

Agency staff participated in the Queensland Reconstruction Authority North West Queensland Flood Monitoring Workshop, working with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Rail, North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils, Bureau of Meteorology, Queensland Agriculture, Australian Agricultural Company, Stanbroke and local government to brainstorm ideas for improving Queensland's flood warning infrastructure.

CEO Shane Stone, Advisory Board member Don Heatley and Agency staff met with local graziers to hear how the primary producer grants are aiding their recovery, and what can be done to help the North West rebuild and be better prepared for future events.

  • CEO Shane Stone gave the opening address at the ‘Regional Solutions’ roundtable, bringing together representatives from all levels of government – including Carpentaria Mayor Jack Bawden, Burke Shire Mayor Ernie Camp and McKinlay Shire Mayor Belinda Murphy – as well as academics and researchers, to highlight the region’s huge potential and the collaboration required to enable recovery and promote future prosperity.
  • Along with Minister for Water Resources, Drought, Rural Finance, Natural Disaster and Emergency Management David Littleproud, the NQLIRA Audit Committee visited a local grazier and butcher shop owner’s property to see the flood damage and hear their views on the future.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison chaired a meeting of the NQLIRA Board with CEO Shane Stone. Later, Mr Morrison and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack joined Mr Stone at a community gathering at the Cloncurry Bowls Club, where they heard how recovery efforts were going.

Also met with local representatives of the sugarcane farmers’ peak body Canegrowers and visited local sugarcane properties to view flood damage to crops and riverbanks. A community information session was held in Mossman where NQLIRA, QRIDA and RFCSNQ staff presented information about grants and other assistance available to primary producers impacted by flood.
